Phillip Sanchez was born at San Felipe, Pueblo in New Mexico in 1951. He was raised on a ranch with 13 siblings who all shared in tending a variety of livestock and raising fruits and vegetables. He still enjoys being out of doors horseback riding for pleasure or checking up on his livestock. His father made and sold natural turquoise nugget necklaces, but his older brother got him interested in silversmithing. When he was a junior in high school, he learned the basics of jewelry making and continued perfecting his technique throughout high school. Phillip has always stayed true to his culture which shows in his jewelry using clouds, rain and other symbols seen in the arts from his pueblo.
